Sunset Views – Fall 2000/Winter 2001

By Sunset • April 10th, 2010

Note: Sunset Lakes residents – Generally we do not post resident phone numbers and Email addresses within the Web version of newsletters. Please refer to your phone directory or the circulated version of the newsletter for phone numbers and Email addresses or leave a message at the Sales Office.

WELCOME – A heartfelt welcome to all new residents of Sunset Lakes. We’re glad that you are here. A very special thank-you to Carla Moore who has personally welcomed many of our new residents. Those of you who have met Carla will certainly appreciate what a fine job she is doing. Thanks, Carla! My, how we have grown…

OWNERS DIRECTORY – The Owners Directory has been a great way for Sunset Lakes residents to get to know each other. An updated version of the Owner’s Directory is currently being organized, complete with resident names, addresses, and phone numbers. Thanks to Carla Moore for gathering the information from new residents as she meets them and for starting to put the revised directory together. If you think that your directory information may need to be updated (or may not have been received yet by Carla), please contact her.

E-MAIL ADDRESSES – We are relying more and more on Email to keep Sunset Lakes residents aware of upcoming events (such as skating parties and pot lucks), special offers (such as organic fertilizing products), and other news. Currently there are over 40 homes receiving their updates exclusively this way. If you’re not on our Email list, please send your Email address to Heather. Note: It is SLOA’s practice to “blind cc” recipients so your Email address is not shared.

— UPDATE ON PAST EVENTS —

WATERSKI TOURNAMENT – The 6th Annual Canada’s Capital Slalom Challenge, held at Sunset Lakes, was a continued success, with both local participants and international competitors. A Canadian national record, in Mens 4 slalom, was set by Ottawa’s Craig Thompson. This competition has become so popular with skiers that, for the last two years, a number of competitors were turned away. Next year, the Challenge will be held on June 23 and 24, with the community pot luck and dance on Saturday, June 23.

WATER SKI SCHOOL – Thanks to all who participated in the Sunset Lakes Water Ski School. We enjoyed one of the best weeks of weather of the summer! Over 30 young and young-at-heart learned to ski or improve on their previous levels of skiing. Can’t wait for next year!
On behalf of all the families who participated, a sincere thank you to the entire Byles family for their efforts on our behalf. Their patience and support, especially both new and more experienced skiers, is remarkable and appreciated.

SWIMMING LESSONS – Once again, we had a great week for the 32 swimmers participating in the YMCA/YWCA Backyard Swim Program. Congratulations to all of the swimmers!! For next year, the week of July 16-20, 2001 has tentatively been booked – this is subject to change but we should know by early May.

GOLF TOURNAMENT – This year’s winners:

  • Mixed couples Carol Manning and Bob Laflamme
  • Single ladies Kim Bekkers
  • Single men Bob Laflamme with a blistering 75

Thanks to all. Next year we will be coordinating the golf tourney and neighbourhood picnic on the same day. Thanks to Steve and Marion for organizing a fantastic golf event again this year.

GREEN THUMBS CLUB – Well, this year has been an unending battle with the weeds. They sure did like all the rain! In spite of it all, the gardens continued to add a little bit of colour and appeal to some of our common areas.
A great big, enthusiastic thanks to ALL the members of the club for all your efforts and hats off to those of you who went ABOVE AND BEYOND the call of duty. As promised, a small ‘award’ of thanks and appreciation was awarded to the ‘Greenest Thumb of All’ – Huguette Roussy and Jacques Brun.
For those of you who are not involved in the club, we appreciate any input you may have with respect to what you might want to see/not see. Keep in mind that all that you see, year after year is a result of the time and efforts of people who give of their own time from their very busy schedules, to their/your community. Email comments to Claudia Buttera.

GREELY GARDENERS – The Greely Gardeners’ Group meets the first Monday of every month, 7:15 p.m. at the Greely Community Centre. There is a different speaker each month through Fall and Winter, as well as several outings during Spring and Summer. A year’s membership is only $10, but you can come to your first meeting for free to see if you like the group. Anyone who wants more information can call Bob Stanley.

FUN RUN and POT LUCK – A great turnout once again for our annual fall Fun Run. We all enjoyed using the new paved paths and the wonderful autumn weather.

— GENERAL INTEREST —

NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH – We need a few new block captains for the Neighbourhood Watch Program. It doesn’t involve a lot of time but can definitely increase the safety of the community. Please contact Kerrin Mobbs for more information about volunteering or about the program in general. Remember it is up to us to keep a watch on the neighbourhood, so if you see anything suspicious, call the police.

PLEASE REMEMBER YOUR POOL KEY – As our community grows and use of the pool increases, safety is crucial and is everyone’s responsibility. It is important to remember to bring your key for every visit and to ensure that all gates that access the pool are always locked.

STOOP AND SCOOP – Just a reminder to dog walkers. Please comply with the Township “poop and scoop” by-law. This will also help keep the swimming areas free of the effect of this run-off.

DESIGN REVIEW APPROVAL – Just reminder that all improvements to your property must be approved by the Design Review Committee (i.e. fences, buildings, additions or improvements. Applications can be obtained at the Sales Office or are now also available directly from the Web site.

DIRECTORS MEETING – Now to be held on the third Wednesday of the following months: (in 2000) November, (in 2001) January, February (AGM), and March. If you would like to raise a topic for discussion, please notify one of the directors and also fill out a Request for Action or Information form (from the Sales Office or Web site).

WEB PAGE – Upcoming additions to the Web page will include: sketches that show various distances along the trails in Sunset Lakes (so walkers and runners can judge their distances), more pictures and graphics to highlight the beauty and amenities of our community, future newsletters, Neighbourhood Watch information, and What’s New updates. If you have updates or ideas, please feel free to forward them through the Web page.

Volunteers required: Block captains for Neighbourhood Watch
